Host - There's Nothing Up There But Heavy Clouds EP (2012)

Country: USA
Genre: Hardcore, Punk
Label: Cricket Cemetery
Tracks: 4

Here's a relatively new band that was recently recommended to me by Josh, who is a co-owner of Redscroll records in Wallingford, CT. Host is a band from the greater MA/NH area of New England who formed in 2010. The band plays an absolutely brutal style of hardcore that's dark, negative, and pissed as hell. If I was to take a stab at adequately describing the band's sound, I'd say that Host sounds like a cross between the dark and crusty stylings of Cursed mixed with the aggro/ultra harsh and pissed sounds of newer hardcore bands such as CREEM, SQRM, or Scapegoat. Overall, There's Nothing Up There But Heavy Clouds is dark, crusty, ultra pissed, and depressing as hell. Host is a definite must listen for fans of Low Places, D.N.F, or a lot of the stuff being released by Youth Attack and Painkiller records. I also included Host's demo for you to hear as well. Enjoy!

Best Practices - The EP LP (2012)

Country: USA
Genre: Punk
Label: Tiny Engines
Tracks: 9

Here's a new band that I've been anticipating highly after hearing about their formation earlier this year. Best Practices is a Providence, RI based band. Best Practices feature membrs of Weak Teeth as well as former members of Light The Fuse And Run, Jesuscentric, and Wow, Owls. I really like Weak Teeth and was a huge fan of both LTFAR and Wow, Owls! so I was really interested in seeing what Best Practices would sound like. To put it simply, Best Practices play a great style of angular, melodic, and garage rock influenced punk. The Ep LP features nine songs that blaze by in about twelve minutes. It's really hard for me to get a handle on the band's sound, but I do pick up hints of bands such as Drive Like Jehu, Hot Snakes, Cloak/Dagger, and Young Livers in the band's sound. Best Practices is gruff, yet melodic and do a really good job in crafting a dense and really solid punk song. I've already listened to this album twice and I've become automatically hooked.

Retrace - Demo (2012)

Country: USA
Genre: Hardcore
Label: Self Released
Tracks: 5

Retrace is a band from Sacramento, California who formed in August 2011. Retrace play a great style of youth crew influenced hardcore that's influenced by bands such as Battery, Turning Point, Go It Alone, and Mouthpiece. It's great to see bands still playing this genre of music and Retrace do it remarkably well. One thing that sets Retrace apart from other similar bands is that Retrace adds a heavy modern hardcore slant to the style, which calls to mind bands such as Modern Life Is War and Give Up The Ghost. This is Retrace's debut five song demo, which was recorded May 3rd, 2012. So if you're into youth crew inspired hardcore, you need to give Retrace a listen. Great stuff.

Endamori - S/T EP (2012)

Country: USA
Genre: Hardcore, Punk, Screamo
Label: Sleepinghouse Records
Tracks: 6

Endamori is a new band from Nashville, Tennessee featuring members of Cease Upon The Capitol, Dolcim, and Qui Samus. Endamori play a progressive style of chaotic screamo and hardcore that's influenced by the band's previous outfits as well as bands such as Orchid, Wolves, Off Minor, and possibly Ampere. Endamori play this genre of music well and offer up a unique perspective that sets them apart from a lot of other band's who play this genre of music. The band's influences are subtle and Endamori's sound is definitely hard to describe at times. If these six songs are any indication on what's to come, then Endamori is definitely a band you need to have your radar on. Great stuff. Enjoy!

Negative Standards - VI-XI LP (2012)

Tracks: 6

Hell yes here's the new album from Negative Standards. Negative Standards are a band from Oakland, CA featuring former members of Acts Of Sedition and Kentucky Fried Doom. Last year I reviewed and posted the band's I-V EP and I've been hooked ever since. Negative Standards play an amazing style of music that combines elements of hardcore, crust, sludge, and d-beat heaviness. If you were a fan of the band's earlier material then you'll be totally blown out of the water by their latest LP. Negative Standard's new album features six new songs of dark, metallic, and negative sounding music that's sure to be a hit for people into bands such as Hammers, Alpinist, Cursed, and Tragedy. Out of respect for the band I'm only streaming the album via the band's bandcamp page. This new album is amazing and is sure to be on many year end lists. Another great addition to the roster of amazing bands released by Vendetta records. Negative Standards also re-released their I-V EP on 10" through Halo Of Flies records.

Teenanger - Frights (2012)

Country: USA
Genre: Garage Punk, Indie, Psychedelic.
Label: Telephone Explosion
Tracks: 9
Length: 21'

Over the course of two proudly lo-fi releases, Toronto’s Teenanger have proven themselves to be astute students of garage-punk tradition, hitching themselves to the spiritual lineage that connects the 13th Floor Elevators’ sneering psychedelia, the Stooges’ death-trip deviance and The Gun Club’s roadhouse rave-ups. But they also understand that every snot-rock band of note has had to wipe its collective nose clean from time to time. So just as the Ramones willingly stared down the barrel of Phil Spector’s gun, and Atlanta hooligans The Black Lips weaseled their way onto Mark Ronson’s speed-dial, Teenanger have ceded production duties for Frights to Howie Beck, redoubtable purveyor of melancholic soft-rock and frequent studio wingman to the likes of Feist and Gonzales. (That’s his trumpety tune you hear in the new Quaker Oats commerical.)

But the unlikely combo yields a best-of-both-worlds scenario: Beck’s deft console touch lends Teenanger’s smash-and-grab aggression greater definition—more bruising backbeats, tension-filled acoustic-guitar accents, omnipresent tambourine rattles—without diminishing its petulant essence. He also helps amplify the cheekiness in frontman Chris Swimmings’ tales of empty bank accounts, lawyer fees, power-hungry security guards and other working-class woes.

Teenanger initially launched their own record label, Telephone Explosion, to keep the crudely recorded cassette alive, but Frights’ hi-fi hijinks come as both a welcome surprise and an authoritative statement of purpose: Being an angry teen is easy; there’s a lot more at stake when you’re tried as an adult. - The Grid

Hell yes. Here's the new LP from Manchester, UK's Hammers.
Hammers are a UK hardcore band who play d-beat/crust punk in the His Hero Is Gone Tragedy, and Integrity school of music. Their myspace page states "too punk to be metal, to metal to be punk" and I think that pretty much covers where Hammers are coming from with their music. Anyway, fans of Alphinist, Cursed, Zann, and Maladie take note. Here's Hammers complete recorded output so far. All downloads provided via Hammers bandcamp page. Included on the site is Hammers-Orogeny 12", Year One cassette discography, and split 7" with Dolcim. Enjoy! Seriously, Vardogr blows everything Hammers has done out of the water. Country: USA
Genre: Hardcore, Punk
Label: Katorga Works/Deranged Records
Tracks: 7

CREEM are a Brooklyn, New York based band comprised of members of Nomos and Natural Law. CREEM play a great throwback style of hardcore and punk with a great 80's Boston vibe and feel. I was really into the band's earlier material, especially their Good Riddance/I Hate You 7". Their earlier material was highly influenced by bands such as SSD, Negative FX, and Slapshot, to name a few of their more apparent influences. The band's earlier material featured a really raw/lo-fi recording that gave CREEM a really cool nostalgic 80's feel. Here's CREEM's latest LP which is being co-released by Katorga Works and Deranged Records. These seven new songs are a great addition to the band's previous material. On CREEM's latest self titled 12", the band retains their 80's Boston vibe, but the production is much better and really showcases the sheer brutality of the band's sound. Overall, these seven songs are the band's best to date and to be honest, I've been listening to this album all week. Yes, it's that good. CREEM are the best band not from Boston who do the "Boston" sound. Great stuff! Enjoy! I also included CREEM's demo and Good Riddance/I Hate You 7" for you to check out as well.

Sailing on._.Hinterland(2011)

Country: Germany
Genre: Crust,melodic,hardcore, punk
Label: DIY
Tracks: 7
Year: 2011

„The worst mistake you could have made was to find comfort in the pain…“ Insgesamt lassen Sailing On auf ihrer neusten Veröffentlichung mehr Melodie zu.

Lastletters - From Her To Here (2012)

Country: USA
Genre: Post Hardcore, Hardcore, Screamo
Label: Self Released
Tracks: 7

Here's a band that recently caught my attention after reading about them on One Path For Me . Lastletters are a band from Bayonne, New Jersey who formed in 2011. Lastletters play a style of music that combines elements of modern screamo and melodic hardcore. Lastletters takes cues from bands such as Pianos Become The Teeth, All Teeth, Touche Amore, and the angrier styling of more melodic emo leaning bands such as Small Brown Bike. From Her To Here is the band's debut LP and these seven songs are a really solid first outing for this band. The band's musicianship, intensity, and urgency in which these songs are played keep Lastletters sounding fresh and keep them from sounding like a rehash of the bands mentioned above. Lastletters easily fit in with a lot of the bands currently signed to Topshelf, No Sleep, and Run For Cover records. Great stuff! Enjoy! War - At War For Youth 7" (2012)

Country: Denmark
Genre: Post Punk
Label: Sacred Bones Records
Tracks: 3

Now here's a collaboration that needs to be heard to be believed. War is an ongoing collaboration between two of Copenhagen’s most active musicians in the punk scene. Loke Rahbek is known for his work with Danish label Posh Isolation, singing in Sexdrome, recording with Skurv, Damien Dubrovnik, and also performs under the solo moniker of LR. Elias Bender Rønnenfelt is the second person in War. Elias Bender Rønnenfelt sings and plays guitar in Iceage, and also plays in the bands Marching Church and Pagan Youth. War is a band who has a cold synth punk sound that's reminescent of Daily Void and Trust. These tree songs were recorded in a basement on four-track cassette in the summer of 2011. The musicians utitized analog synth, pedals, drums and guitar. both musicians sing and play a bit of everything. It is a compelling and utterly unique new genre, pulling influence from lo-fi post punk to early Chicago house music. The b-side, “Brodermordet,” is a about fratricide, specifically Cain and Abel. I'm not going to pretend I'm an expert on this genre of music. All I know is that War is a refreshing change of space and a band definitely worth checking out if you're into something that's fresh and unique. I was hooked from the start because I really liked Ice Age's New Brigade and the Sexdrome 12" that came out on Youth Attack in 2011.

Moss Icon - Complete Discography (2012)

Country: USA
Genre: Post Punk, Punk
Label: Temporary Residence Ltd.
Tracks: 19

Moss Icon was a band from Annapolis, Maryland who existed from 1987-1991. In their short four year existence, Moss Icon created a progressive and explosively emotive style of music that was a marked contrast from everything that was considered punk music at the time. Moss Icon played a style of music that was an unholy amalgamation of the bleak post-punk sounds of bands such as Joy Division with the angular voltility of bands such as The Wipers. Completing the package was a dark and sinister tone, which really resulted in a band that was unafraid to stand apart from anything else being played back in the late 1980's and early 1990's. These nineteen songs were originally released on two 7" (Hate in Me and Mahpiua Luta) in 1988, an LP entitled Lyburnum Wits End Liberation Fly on Vermiform records in 1994, and posthumously as an LP entitled It Disappears on Ebullition records in 1994. Many of today's modern bands owe a lot of credit to the sound pioneered by Moss Icon. These songs still sound fresh and unique today as they did when I first heard Moss Icon back in college. Great stuff. These songs have been completely remastered and that only adds to the quality of this discography. Enjoy!

Country: USA
Genre: Hard Rock, Stoner, Psychedelic

Length: 62'

Royal Thunder’s debut full length ‘CVI’ (roman numeral 106) explodes in sound in a way that their critically heralded debut ep only hinted at. Propelled by singer Mlny Parsonz’ captivatingly passionate and soulful vocals, ‘CVI’ is a psych/prog/metal fan’s dream come true---a triumphant display of crescendo-ing riffs, sultry vocals and propulsive grooves. Way way more than just a brilliant metal album, ‘CVI’ is a sultry southern hard rock thinker of an album that appeals to both the Skynyrd and the Neurosis sides of the brain. An absolute must have for fans of the Atlanta and Savannah metal and hard rock scenes (Mastodon, Baroness, Kylesa, Black Tusk, etc).

... mientras tanto seguiremos siendo incapaces.

Morrison Brook is a four piece indie rock band from Purchase, New York. Morrison Brook formed in 2011 and play a great style of indie rock that's really hard to pigeonhole. Mad/Sad is the band's debut LP, which was released on May 3rd. Musically, the band's influences are varied, which makes for a sound that's not easy for me to describe. At times, the band takes a lo-fi approach to their sound, which reminds me of early Meneguar. At other times I get a 90's alt. rock sound that reminds me of Built To Spill orArchers Of Loaf. Add a bit of fuzzed out distortion with a strong punk backbone and you have one really well crafted album. I even get hints of emo/punk played by bands such as Teenage Cool Kids or Big Kids at times, especially with the gang style shouted vocals. Overall, Mad/Sad makes for a great listen. The Spanish vocals only add to the amazingness of this lp and all the "whoa" parts will have you singing along even if you dont speak the language. This is some absolutely raging punk in the Spanish tradition, equally influenced by more melodic bands like Eskorbuto and RIP and the more raw bands. What you get is basic, four-the-floor hardcore with catchy as fuck, whoa-soaked vocals over the top of it. This thing is jam-packed to the hilt with hooks... fans of Vaaska and Peligro Social will dig HARD. Catch the Histeria!!!

Población superflua._.st

Country: Spain
Genre: hardcore, punk
Label: MalditosVinilos
Tracks: 7

Traveler._.Nottingh lasts long enough(2012)

Country: Usa
Genre: Hardcore, punk, melodic
Tracks: 5
Label: Self relased
Year: 2012

Maloi._.Boys you gotta slow sown (2012)

Country: Ukraine
Tracks: 5
Year: 2012
Genre: powerpop, rock,punk.

Boys,You Gotta Slow Down is a first record from the band MALOI based in Kiev, Ukraine.

Band members spent most of their lives playing in a lot of crappy (but most of them were not crappy at all!!) local punk/hardcore/metal and even dance bands, before getting together once again in 2011 to dedicate themselves to their beloved music - popy punk rock with melancholic motives. Lyrically inspired by the feeling of loosing their youth too early, along with beer, trips and their city, musically by pretty much everything they listen to, they also often talk like pirates, so they are hard to understand.

DNF - Hurt 7" (2012)

Country: USA
Genre: Hardcore, Punk, Grind, Powerviolence
Label: High Anxiety
Tracks: 8

DNF are a California based band featuring members of Touche Amore and Trash Talk. DNF formed in 2007 and was formerly known as Duke Nukem Forever. DNF play a caustic and aggressive style of music that incorporates elements of hardcore, punk, sludge, grind and powerviolence. Hurt is DNF's first formal vinyl release and these eight songs provide for an angry, unpredictable, venomous, and volatile listen. I've listened to DNF before, but never really paid close attention until their debut 7" on High Anxiety. These eight songs translate well to vinyl and DNF are definitely a band to watch out for. Fans of Ghostlimb, Dangers, Dead Language, and Eddie Brock need to give Hurt a listen. Great stuff! Enjoy!

Countdown To Oblivion - Discography (2012)

Country: Canada
Genre: Hardcore, Punk
Label: A389 Recordongs
Tracks: 16

Countdown To Oblivion were a band from Toronto, Canada who existed from 1998-2000. Countdown To Oblivion featured Chris Colohan (Cursed, The Swarm, Left For Dead, Burning Love) as well as members of Legion DCLXVI, One Blood, Rammer, and Brutal Knights. Countdown To Oblivion played a brutal, metallic, and pissed as hell style of fastcore that's influenced by some of Chris Colohan's older metallic bands such as Left For Dead and The Swarm. This album compiles all of the band's songs including their demo, 7", as well as their songs from the split they shared with They Live. It's great to see these songs see the light of day once again in a conveniant LP that compiles Countdown To Oblivion's entire recorded output. To be honest, I didn't even know this band existed until I learned A389 was doing this release. I was hooked after hearing the opening chords on this album and I'm totally convinced that anything Chris Colohan is involved in will be amazing. That's definitely the case here. Fans of Left For Dead, Cursed, The Swarm, and Haymaker need to give Countdown To Oblivion a listen. Highly recommended! Enjoy!

Locktender/Cassilis - Split 7" (2012)

Country: USA
Genre: Post Hardcore/Screamo
Label: I Corrupt/Bear Records
Tracks: 3

I recently received a request from Ingo, who runs I. Corrupt records to post this killer release. On this 7" we have Casillis from Philadelphia, PA and Locktender from MI. I've reviewed Casillis on this blog before and their two newest songs do not disappoint. Casillis features former and current members of Boy Problems, Make Me, Boys And Sex, and The Lady Is Not For Burning. Casillis play a great stripped down and gritty style of hardcore and Punk with touches of screamo thrown in for good measure. Locktender is a band from Cleveland, Oh and features former members of Men As Trees. Locktender plays a great style of epic and conceptually based music that blends elements of screamo with post rock. Overall, this 7" makes for a great listen and is well worth checking out. Great stuff. Enjoy!

Burning Love - Black Widow 7" (2012)

Country: Canada
Genre: Hardcore, Punk
Label: High Anxiety Records
Tracks: 2

Burning Love is a band that definitely needs no introduction to the pages of this blog. Burning Love is a hardcore/punk band from Canada featuring Chris Colohan (Cursed, The Swarm, Left For Dead, Ruination, Countdown To Oblivion). Burning Love is definitely more punk and rock influenced than Cursed, but still rooted in doom/stoner metallic hardcore. Definitely a must listen for fans of Cursed, Tragedy, From Ashes Rise, His Hero Is Gone, or The Holy mountain. This new two song 7" is a teaser for the band's new LP and Southern Lord debut entitled Rotten Thing To Say. Look for Burning Love's new album this June. On this 7" Burning Love shares more in common with MC5 and possibly Queens Of The Stone Age. Another great 7" and I can't wait for the new album.

Swarm Of Spheres - Swarm Of Spheres EP (2012)

Country: Canada
Genre: Stoner Metal, Sludge.
Label: Meatlocker
Tracks: 6
Length: 30'

Swarm Of Spheres is a three-piece outfit situated in Ottawa,Ontario. Formed in December 2010, the band members have also done time in Jesus Mullet, Bless This Mess, I Hate Sally (Underground Operations/Vagrant Records), The Chariot (Solid State / Good Fight Music), Barn Burner (Metal Blade Records) and Architect (Black Market Activities).

In July 2011 at the Meatlocker Studio in Ottawa,ON with Paul "Yogi" Granger manning the soundboard, the band didn't waste any time plowing through the tracks of their self-titled debut despite leaving a path of blown speakers, broken drumsticks and cracked cymbals in their wake. Rather than producing a sterile, polished recording, the band decided to capture the energy of a live setting by using mainly first takes. Featuring 30 minutes of music, the six songs combine elements of sludgy stoner, fast-paced rock n' roll and spacey, atmospheric doom that won't allow the band's sound to be pigeonholed to one specific genre. With the mastering process completed in December 2011, the EP was self-released in digital format and available as a free download via the band's Bandcamp site with plans for an official release in the near future.

The You and What Army Faction - VENT EP (2012)

Country: Greece
Genre: Drone Punk
Label: No Mars Team
Tracks: 3
Length: 15'

Experimental. Thats it! This band produce a quite experimental sound that moves through industrial paths and concludes to a noise-rock and psychedelic avenue. Grails’ elements, Sonic Youth’s smell, Einsturzende neubauten’s influence, Spacemen 3 memories, Spiritualized atmospheres, OM’s ideas and Earth’s drones, fit the puzzle of these three tracks of this excellent EP. I am not sure if they have been influenced from all these bands, maybe they never heard of them, but I can say that they produce something that reaches these masters but still keep a unique and different profile. A personal style and some characteristics that ensure me that they never copy other bands, and their inspiration is authentic. I think this is the best EP for 2011 so far and I believe that the band compose excellent music with a fresh atmosphere that combines several styles and sounds from outer space. You have to give it a try, and wait for More Mars to release it! -Noize

Tooth - Tooth (2012)

Country: Spain
Genre: Post Hardcore, Metal, Noise Rock.
Label: DIY
Tracks: 5
Length: 22'

Tooth is a new band from basque country, Spain. Their sound is very familiar for us, the first listen remember immediately at basque bands like, Lisabö, Izaera or Dut. Long life to Tooth!!, them together with Meido, are the worthy successors of this sound so distinctive that seemed extinct. If you haven't fucking idea about previous bands, imagine a combo Unsane vs. Helmet. Enjoy.
